Tribute to Rachael Bland

Sadly it was announced this morning that Rachael Bland (@rachael_hodges) had died peacefully surrounded by her close family, below is my tribute to her and the legacy she has created which I wrote a few days ago when she announced she was in her final days. My thoughts are with her family.

For those of you who have been following people with Cancer on Twitter or other forms of social media over the last couple of years, you will have not failed to come across the wonderful podcast by the You, Me and Big C team for BBC Radio 5 live.

This wonderful podcast presented by Rachael Bland, Deborah James and Lauren Mahon is an excellent source of entertainment, frank discussion, laughs and tears on the subject of Cancer and how it impacts the lives of those affected.

The three presenters have or have had cancer and so can discuss the subjects with a knowledge and frankness that is only possible if you have experienced it.

Rachael Bland has worked for the BBC in a number of journalistic roles, including most recently as a Radio 5 live presenter and she has continued to work through much of her treatment for Triple Negative Breast cancer. She has chronicled the ups and downs of the treatment, the side effects, the fears and hopes in a way that has helped many people and brought her many fans for her courage and openness.

So it was with great sadness that I read today that she has been given only days to live and in true Rachael Bland style she signed it off on social media with the tweet below. rachaelbland au revoir

For anyone who hasn’t listened to the podcast, please do take a time to listen, it is truly a great piece of entertainment and education all wrapped in one. I wish Rachael and her family calmness and strength in the days to come and I would like to thank her for making Cancer much less of a taboo subject and she is one of the reasons why I started writing this blog.
